Greetings ~

Train wreaks are always bad news. And the worse they are, the more news coverage they receive. And in 1904 it was no different. The 1904 Doremus Train Wreck at Glenwood, Illinois was a terrible event. Made even worse by the fact that it involved many children. The news reporters scrambled for more and more information about the accident.
In 1904, it was much harder to get news information as there was no television, no radio, no telephones and surely no internet. A reporter had to rely on his own wits and many traveled to the accident sites to scoop up any stories that they could first-hand. Many of them were pressed into service as rescuers of the injured and the dead while they were there.
The reporter here did a great job reporting the event in the Chicago Tribune on July 14, the day after the wreak had taken place. Of course, he wrote his story in the style that was dominate at the time. He wrote very dramatic and covered all of the gory and messy scenes that he witnessed.
Here is the article as it appeared in the Tribune. It tells of the eye witness account of the scenes that played out on that fateful night back in 1904.
